Products and services for ICT-empowered development

InWEnt uses a variety of its capacity building tools to support the effective application of ICTs in different development areas. Some of the tools are part of the it@inwent strategic activities. Additional tools listed below have been developed in cooperation with or entirely by other InWEnt departments and local partners.

All of the InWEnt products and services include contributions of the InWEnt pool of local experts such as consultants, technical networks, decision-makers and alumni of InWEnt courses.

On-site and Blended Learning Courses Africa:

ict@innovation - Creating Business and Learning Opportunities with Free and Open Source Software in Africa
The ict@innovation programme builds capacities in African ICT small/medium enterprises to make a business with Free/Open Source Software (FOSS). Through enhanced knowledge on FOSS business models in African contexts, FOSS technical certifications, and practical skills in FOSS application development, ict@innovation aims to encourage the growth of African ICT industries, particularly in Southern and East Africa. ict@innovation is a partnership of InWEnt (Capacity Building International) and FOSSFA (Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa).


In 2009 several high-level training courses will be held (2 weeks on-site, 6 weeks online) on the topic of "African FOSS Business Models for ICT-based SME" in Southern and East Africa. More information: http://www.ict-innovation.fossfa.net/

Other upcoming training courses under ict@innovation include "Quality Management for FOSS Services through Certification" and "Innovative local FOSS Applications for social and economic development".

Business Related IT Consultancy (it@ab)¶
The 1-year blended learning course targets African junior IT specialists and African IT related businesses. The program focuses on business-related services such as IT security, eBusiness applications, eLearning, and enterprise solutions using open source software. It includes a German language training, continuous work on an e-project, and a 2.5 months internship in a German, IT-related company. The course is part of the it@ab network initiative. As of 2006, this course is not being offered.

it@foss supports the development and application of local innovative software solutions and business models based on free and open source software (FOSS) in the ASEAN region.

IT-Training courses for cooperatives in Thai, Bahasa Indonesia and English (it@inwent)
Following the “train-the-trainer” course for IT-trainers and experts of cooperatives in Southeast Asia (it-coops network initiative), curricula and training materials are available and updated, which are tailored towards the specific demands of the respective cooperative environment and available in English as well as local languages such as Thai and Bahasa Indonesian. eLearning Courses & Learning Material

Open Source & More IT for African Business
The it@ab network together with InWEnt have released a series of e-Learning courses on "Open Source & More IT for African Business". The focus lies on "Free and Open Source Software" (FOSS) as a key technology to drive innovation, add local value and create sustainable and affordable ICT-solutions. The courses introduce relevant and adapted key concepts and applications such as E-Business Applications & Architecture, IT Security, Open Source IT, Web Publishing, E-Learning as well as Zope & the Collaborative Learning Environment CLE2. Courses by other units of InWEnt

eLearning Skills Training Program (eLearning unit, Global Campus 21): InWEnt offers five online-courses for education professionals with a basic eLearning background, which convey relevant knowledge and skills in order to become 1. e-tutors, 2. content developers, 3. eLearning technicians, 4. eLearning project managers. Every module takes about 4 weeks and will be supported by e-tutors who guide the learning process and motivate the development of e-collaboration within the learning group. In addition, a non-tutor guided online course conveys an overview of strategies for eLearning providers.

Skills Suite for Management and Leadership, Knowledge Management (Global Campus 21)
The InWEnt Skills Suite for Management and Leadership is a series of short online courses on cross-cutting topics of personnel and organization development, which can be used as components in specialized advanced training courses or as self-contained offers. It is targeted in particular to InWEnt alumni.

eLearning Development and Implementation (eLearning unit, Global Campus 21)
The 9 months blended learning course targets professionals and institutions engaged in education and vocational training. It conveys an insight into all relevant eLearning areas and qualifies to successfully act as an eLearning expert. Topics include instructional design, content development, interactivity, and basic eLearning technology. The course begins each year in March with an on-site workshop in Germany.

Online Journalism

Online Journalism (InWEnt International Institute for Journalism, IIJ)
The IIJ offers in-depth training courses for online journalists. The objective of the online journalism training courses is to contribute to increase transparency and political participation in the partner countries, in order to improve the conditions for democratization and social and economic development.

    “Quality, open innovation and the GC21 E-Academy” – these themes have been at the core of GIZ’s engagement at eLearning Africa, the continents largest conference on ICT for development, education and training. The ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)’ reached out to the more than 1700 participants from all over the world gathering in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from May 25 to 27.

    More networking of African IT specialists with Europe and joint building of advanced training materials – this is what a new partnership of FOSSFA's and GIZ’s ict@innovation programme with the Europe-wide ‘Free Technology Academy’ (FTA) is all about. The Free Technology Academy (FTA), financially supported by the Life Long Learning programme (LLP) of the European Commission, is a collaboration between the Netherlands-based Free Knowledge Institute and three European universities.
